Agricultural irrigation accounts for over 70% of the world's freshwater use.
At I.F., water efficiency is central to how we think about our role as institutional asset managers. We believe that owning farmland carries a responsibility to everyone who depends on the same water, and to the farmers who will tend to the land generations from now.
We are proud to share our most recent update to Stewardship in Action: Water Efficiency. This report provides a window into the principles behind our approach. As climate patterns become more unpredictable and water an ever-growing concern, it is essential that our methods remain adaptive and resourceful.
One of many examples of our commitment to Leaving the Land Better Than We Found it is at our Hyder Valley Farm in the Sonoran Desert. Our team introduced a native desert fiber crop that uses roughly one-third the water of the alfalfa historically grown there. Irrigated for just twelve hours a month, it is projected to sustain production on the farm three times as long as alfalfa, saving precious water, while earning higher rent for the land.
